“I’m happier than ever!” enthused 19-year-old Nyhiem Howl when asked about how he’s finding his apprenticeship in the planning department at City of Wolverhampton Council.
Nyhiem, who combines working for the council with attending college one day a week to study for the Level 2 diploma in business, added: “When I saw the job description for the council apprenticeship I thought it sounded really professional and that it would be a good opportunity for me to work for a large organisation where there will hopefully be opportunities to progress in my career in the future.
“Although I’ve only been in post since September, I’ve already gained lots of experience shadowing council officers, learning how to use planning programmes, doing assessments on site visits and communicating with professionals such as estate agents and solicitors – and I can use these to help with my college assignments too.
“Doing an apprenticeship is so much better than stopping on at school and going to university as I’m gaining a qualification as well as doing practical tasks and getting a real taste of proper working life – it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!”
