If you want to work with children and young people this course will help you progress within your profession.

The course will help you to develop a range of skills to enable you to work with children and young people from birth to 19 years and through a work experience placement you will get the chance to put the skills you learn in the classroom into practice in a real-life setting working alongside qualified staff.

To enhance your learning, throughout the course you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers who visit the college to talk to students about their experiences in the profession.

· Four or more GCSESs at level 2 or above

OR

· Successful completion of a full level 2 study programme*

*If you do not have the GCSEs required you will need to take an initial assessment and be achieving Level 1 in Literacy.

 

You are also required to have:

· Experience of working with children

· Obtained a suitable work placement for a minimum of eight hours per week - either paid or voluntary

· Good standard of spoken and written English

· Satisfactory DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check

During this course you will study the following modules:

By studying this course you will:

· Develop your understanding of child development

· Learn how to assess children and young people and plan to meet their individual needs

· Develop an awareness of health and safety, safeguarding and child protection

· Develop your confidence in working with children and professionals

· Improve your study skills

· Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in group activities

Throughout the course you will be assessed in the following ways:

· Assessment by a tutor

· Workplace assessment

· education support workers who visit families of pre-school children in their homes

· foster carers

· children and families support workers

· children and family court advisory and support service advisers

· progression to further study for youth work

· professional assistant in social care

We have a very good success rate on this course and excellent feedback from our past students, many of whom have gone on to become family support workers, nursery managers and social workers or progressed to higher levels of study such as HNCs, HNDs, foundation degrees or university degrees.

Throughout the course you will be supported by fully qualified tutors who will provide training in early years, observe and assess your performance in each unit, check and mark your work and give you regular feedback. They will also support you to develop a portfolio of work and put together your CV or personal statement.

Following an Ofsted inspection in November 2017, the college maintained its 'Good' rating, with the report highlighting a number of strengths including students' high achievement rates and development of academic, practical and technical knowledge they need for further study or work.
