Community Courses - City of Wolverhampton College

City of Wolverhampton College is working with local community organisations to provide courses at neighbourhood venues that support the learning and skills needs of local people.

Asbestos Awareness

You will learn what asbestos is; how and where it was used; how it can harm us; what the law says; who is at risk and how to work safely with it.


IOSH Working Safely

Provides an understanding of the principles of health and safety and accident prevention. You will gain an awareness of basic health and safety law. Topics include: manual handling, accident prevention, fire prevention working at height, hazardous substances, transport/vehicles work equipment, risk assessment, etc.


Manual Handling

The course is suitable for anyone looking to increase their awareness and skills in manual operations that involve lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying loads of articles.


Safe Moving and Handling

The course covers basic moving and handling principles, which includes moving people.


Risk Assessment

Gain an improved level of awareness of the legal and practical issues related to this task. Learn how an organisation can apply hazard identification methods in conjunction with a hierarchy of risk controls to ensure the development of an effective risk control management system.


Emergency First Aid at Work

Suitable for anyone who wants to have general first aid knowledge for the work environment.


First Aid for Child and Baby

Course aimed at parents and carers looking after children and babies.


Paediatric First Aid

Suitable for people working with or looking after children. Course covers CPR, Injuries and Childhood illnesses and is a requirement of Ofsted for Childminders.


Safeguarding and Child Protection

Introduces you to the area of caring for and working with children and vulnerable adults. It will help develop an understanding of various aspects of childcare, health, development and learning.


Mental Health Awareness

Suitable for people who wish to increase their knowledge of mental health, the factors that cause mental ill health and the ways that mental health problems can be managed.


Early Years and Healthcare

Suitable for people looking to work in Early Years or Health. Students will gain a BTEC qualification on successful completion.


Food Safety and Catering

Gain a recognised Level 2 qualification to help you handle food safely at home and within a working environment.


Customer Service

Course aimed at individuals interested in all aspects of customer service for example communication skills, external customer service, team work and customer relations.


Start IT (Beginners)

If you are new to computers then this is the course for you, it covers switching on a computer through to producing a printed document, includes using Word, Excel and internet/email.


Let’s Get Digital – Universal Job Match

Suitable for anyone wanting to improve their IT skills to help them use the Universal Job Match system. This course includes advice on how to create a CV, use the system, search the internet, register for job alerts, uploads CVs and send/receive emails.


Maths Functional Skills

During the course you will develop ways to help you use maths skills more effectively in a variety of situations in life, study and work. Depending on your level you will study some or all of the following:

  • Working with numbers using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Working with data eg graphs, charts, data trends etc
  • Shape and space eg area, perimeter and volume

English Functional Skills

Our English Functional Skills course will equip you with the basic practical skills required in everyday life, education or the workplace. The course will enable you to read, write and speak confidently and independently enabling you to achieve your aims and ambitions.


Speaking and Listening Skills (Basic ESOL)

This programme will help you with every day English communication skills.


Careers into Cleaning

This course provides an awareness of working in the cleaning industry and covers dealing with routine and nonroutine waste, health & safety for the cleaning and support industry, working with
customers, infection control, principles of decontamination and waste management. Students will also gain certification in COSHH, Risk Assessment and Manual Handling.


Construction Gateway (First Steps into Construction)

This course provides an awareness of working in the construction industry and an overview of the construction industry, communication in the workplace, customer service and job roles and responsibilities. Students will also gain certification in Asbestos Awareness, Risk Assessment and Manual Handling.


Careers into Care

This course covers the core values in Adult Health and Social Care, Equality and Diversity in the Workplace, Infection Control, Effective Communication, Health and Safety in the Workplace, Customer Service, Data Protection/Confidentiality and Understanding your Role and Responsibilities.


Get Ahead Programme (GAP)

Gain a recognised qualification in Personal Development and Employability Skills.
The course covers:

  • Developing Personal Confidence and Self Awareness
  • Using Teamwork Skills
  • Punctuation and Grammar
  • Handling Data

Students will also learn about Financial Planning and Budgeting,
Health & Safety in the Workplace, Equality and Diversity,

LASER (Learn Achieve Succeed Engage Reward)

L A S E R is a 15 week training course aimed at young people between 16 and 19. The course aims to develop personal and employability skills. Successful students will achieve Level 2 Certificate in Employability and Personal Development Skills qualification. On successful completion, students can apply for a traineeship, apprenticeship or college course.


Get Ahead Plus Programme

For individuals wanting to develop personal skills for the job market as well as improve on employability skills and how to apply for jobs. Students will achieve an OCN Level 1 Award in Employability and Personal Development Skills.
The course covers:

  • Developing Personal Confidence and Self Awareness
  • Using Teamwork Skills
  • Manual Handling
  • Risk Assessment
  • Emergency First Aid

Steps to Success (CV Workshop)

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to gain employment. The course will cover writing a strong personal profile to summarise your skills and personal qualities; producing a CV detailing your experience and strengths to employers; saving your CV in an appropriate format; identifying job search websites; setting up a personal email account, writing an email message; attaching your CV to an email; applying for a job and writing a covering letter to do with job application.


Pre-Apprenticeship programme “Yes to the Job”

Do you have the qualifications required for an apprenticeship but need to improve your confidence and brush up on your employability skills?

Students will learn how to develop skills to impress prospective employers and secure the apprenticeship in their chosen career field.

The course will cover Presentation Skills, CV writing, Communication in the workplace, Career Planning, Equality and Diversity, Financial Planning and Budgeting and much more…


Prince’s Trust Team Programme

This is a 12 week personal development programme which aims to increase confidence and motivation to enable young people to move towards employment. Activities include team-building and communication skills, personal and team challenges, supporting the local community and focusing on progression and employability training.

The Employability Team work closely with employers to deliver bespoke training courses to suit their recruitment for specific job roles. Courses include Care, Customer Service, IT and Retail. We are supporting local employers with their recruitment for manufacturing in the car industry.

Earn while you learn with local employers
Apprentices earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Off the job usually on a day release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. An apprenticeship can also lead to university.
