If you want a career in engineering this course will give you an indepth knowledge of the industry and enable you to learn a range of skills in a work-related environment.
You will learn through a combination of workshop-based practical activities and classroom sessions and develop your understanding of the theory behind engineering principles, engineering technology and technical information.
Successful completion of the course will enable you to pursue an engineering apprenticeship or progress to the BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in mechanical engineering.
This is a one year full-time course, the equivalent of 1.5 A-levels and, as part of the qualification, you will be required to undertake work experience.
You will train at the new £8.1 million purpose-built Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston, which boasts dedicated engineering workshops kitted out with industry-standard equipment including fabrication and welding suites, a specialist CAD room featuring AutoCAD and SolidWorks software, CNC milling machines, lathes, 3D printers, mechatronic t-rigs and a laser cutter.
To access this course you are required to have:
· Four or more GCSESs at Grade 5 or above including maths and English, and preferably science
As part of the admissions process you will be required to attend an interview with an admissions tutor and complete an online assessment based on engineering principles
During the course you will study the following units:
· Engineering principles
· Engineering design
· Working effectively as part of a team
· Commercial and quality principles
You will also have the choice of a range of optional units including:
· Machining techniques
· Computer aided design
· Analogue electrical circuits
By studying this course you will:
· Gain industry-standard skills
· Gain an indepth understanding of the engineering industry
· Understand the importance of health and safety in the workplace
· Develop your maths skills based around engineering principles
Throughout the course you will be assessed in the following ways:
· Internally-assessed assignments
· Two externally-marked assessments
You will work towards achieving an overall grade for the qualification - pass/merit/distinction - along with individual grades for each unit taken.
Successful completion of the course will enable you to:
· Progress to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
· Gain an engineering apprenticeship
We have a state-of-the-art modern engineering workshop equipped with a range of industry-standard equipment including millers, lathes, CNC tooling and laser cutters, 3D and 2D CAD suites, along with fabrication and welding equipment such as Guillotines, Folders, Hand Tools, TIG, MIG and MMA.
Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to take part in a range of additional activities to enhance your learning such as industry visits, hearing from inspirational speakers, taking part in fundraising events and showcasing your talents in competitions.
