People who want to work in health and social care can learn the skills they need to apply for jobs in the sector thanks to a free training course being offered by City of Wolverhampton College.
The new Wolverhampton Health and Social Care Academy – developed in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council and the Skills for Care charity – will boost the skills of local people and give employers in the sector access to a pool of trained staff.
The two-week training programme will cover working in a person-centred way, safe moving and handling of patients, infection control, first aid, and technology in health and social care.
The scheme will also cover employability skills such as communication, working as part of a team, time management, CV writing and interview skills.
Lynn Parker, head of faculty for professional services and leisure industries, at the college, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with colleagues from the city council to launch the new Health and Social Care Academy which will give local people the skills they need to apply for jobs in the sector and give employers access to a pool of trained work-ready candidates.”
Councillor Stephen Simkins, City of Wolverhampton Council deputy leader and cabinet member for city economy, said: “This academy will equip city residents with the vital skills they need for a career in the health and social care sector.
“The pandemic has further demonstrated how critical this sector is and highlighted the job opportunities available.
“Our Wolves at Work team has successfully secured employment for more than 6,000 people and working closely with city partners like City of Wolverhampton College means we can deliver this type of support to help our residents on the pathway to employment.”
