Having a daughter with very long and thick hair made 31-year-old Cassandra Myrie realise she needed to learn how to handle it – and prompted her to sign up for a hairdressing qualification so that she can have a career in the industry too.
Cassandra, who is studying for a Level 2 certificate in hairdressing, said: “The course teaches the basics of hairdressing – such as washing, conditioning, blow drying, styling, cutting, colouring and perming – as well as the science and structure of the hair so that you gain a better understanding of how it reacts to certain products and the effects that they can have.
“And working with clients in the college’s Academy salon is brilliant! It’s daunting at first but very rewarding when you get good comments on a style you’ve created and because it’s open to the public it’s just like working in a proper hair salon.
“Combining studying with having children can be a challenge at times but the tutors are very supportive and understanding and I’ve shown that it’s never too late to learn something new. I’m glad I took the step to come here as I’m doing things I never thought I’d be able to do.”
