After completing a work experience placement with engineering company Heinrich Georg UK, 20 year old Dan Webb was offered the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship with the same company. After three years, Dan has now completed his Level 3 apprenticeship, and through the support of the college has been awarded a distinction.
Dan said: “I chose to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to develop my work skills and gather experience while continuing with my education.
“My current job role at Heinrich Georg UK involves design, development and detailing of special purpose machines for a wide range of sectors such as aerospace, industrial and universities. At work I have learnt how to use design software, as well as learnt about design principles, material properties and other interfaces with mechanical machinery such as hydraulics and electrics.
“During my apprenticeship some units required coursework which was then marked by the lecturers, and others were test based. Support throughout the apprenticeship was great, if I had any queries with the course my assessor was easy to contact and approach.
“There are so many benefits to studying on an apprenticeship. Not only does it often offer a more direct route to your desired career path, but it also allows you to gain experience within your workplace, exposing you to a wide range of skills, whilst also working towards a Level 3 qualification.
“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who is looking to start their career after finishing school. I believe it is a great way to learn new skills and I have definitely benefited from it after completing mine.”
