Megan Perry, aged 18, is currently halfway through her Level 2 qualification, working as an apprentice with Lisa Milner Hair Salon. Talking about her experience, Megan said:
“I chose this industry as I wanted to pursue a career as a hairstylist; it’s something I have always enjoyed and had a passion for. As I am a very hands on person, sitting still in a classroom isn’t for me. By doing an apprenticeship, I am getting my own wage, and this job gives me independence and something to work towards.
“On a day-to-day basis I help to keep the salon tidy, greet the clients and get them sat down and ready for whatever service it is they are booked in for, make drinks for clients, and make sure all the stylists have got everything they need depending on what service there doing.
“This apprenticeship is giving me an insight into a stylist’s day and how to do what they do; how to carry out each service that as a salon we provide. I am learning all the techniques and background knowledge, helping to prepare for working in a busy salon. I have a group of stylists around me that constantly are supporting me, which has improved my confidence massively. I have developed on all my technical skills, and theory knowledge.
“An apprenticeship is an amazing way to get to your dream career. You are learning while working, so by the end of your course you will have all the qualifications, and possibly a job waiting for you.”
Lucy Chilton, the salon manager, has been working with Megan and said the following: “Megan is currently in her second year of her Level 2 qualification. From the first day, she has been extremely hard working and so helpful to all of our staff. We can already tell that she is going to make a brilliant hair stylist.
“Apprentices are extremely important to our salon, they keep the salon running smoothly and ensuring our stylists keep their column in check.”
