Sam Wilson – engineering apprentice
With an interest in engineering, Sam Wilson started as a trainee welder at Syspal Ltd, a manufacturer of stainless steel and aluminium products, in Broseley and was offered an apprenticeship by the company to develop his skills further.
Sam, aged 31, who is studying for the Level 3 diploma in fabrication and welding as part of his apprenticeship, said: “I produce mechanical handling equipment for the food industry, mainly working with stainless steel and doing MIG and TIG welding.”
“During the course I have improved my theoretical knowledge of fabrication and welding and the training has given me a better base knowledge to help me progress further in my career.
“I have been assessed on my underpinning knowledge, as well as being visually assessed when my assessor came to the company and supervised me while I worked, and they gave me feedback on my written work too.
“My apprenticeship has given me more opportunities in my chosen sector of work and I’d say to anyone that an apprenticeship is a great way to get into your dream career as it gives you real world experience in your chosen sector and that is something you can’t achieve sitting in a classroom.”
