Why did you decide to take on an apprentice?
We needed extra staff and wanted to train them from scratch
What duties does the apprentice carry out?
Apprentices mostly carry out the same as another staff member – EYFS, tracking children’s development, needs and interests, following all policies and procedures, safeguarding children, applying first aid when needed, providing intimate care, feeding.
How has the company benefitted from having an apprentice?
It means we can train a member of staff to our own standards.
What support did you receive from the college when setting up the apprenticeship and what support is provided to you and your apprentice during their training?
We are supported throughout and if there are any issues – such as an apprentice’s performance or attendance – they provide advice and work with us to develop a joint approach.
What would you say to other employers who are considering taking on an apprentice?
Definitely consider taking on an apprentice through City of Wolverhampton College – they are supportive to the employers and ensure apprentices gain full knowledge to carry out their responsibilities.
