Creative arts students at City of Wolverhampton College didn’t let Covid restrictions get in the way of putting on their end of year show by switching to hosting a virtual event featuring performances from local acts.
The Live Loud and Lockdown gig – which replaced the annual Live, Loud and Local event usually held at the Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton – was streamed live on the college music department’s YouTube channel to an audience of over 600 people earlier this month.
The event featured sets recorded at the Slade Rooms from local acts Broozer, Marstone, Joe James Thomas and Scorpz, as well as a live broadcast from the theatre at the Paget Road campus of acoustic performances by Aiden Best and Ruby Allen .
Students studying for an HND in live sound and events were joined by those on the UAL Level 3 extended diploma in music performance and production to source acts, design and construct lighting, record and mix performances, advertise the event on social media and stream the event online.
Jo Slater, curriculum manager for creative arts said: “Our students were determined to continue the tradition of putting on the end of year Live, Loud and Local gig and worked together to produce the virtual event.
“Their dedication and commitment to ensuring the event was a success demonstrates their ability to adapt and think creatively and will surely impress employers when they are applying for jobs in the industry in the future.”

The college – which was named as Training Provider of the Year for its creative arts courses at the Creative and Cultural Skills Awards 2019 – is currently recruiting for full-time, part-time and higher education courses starting in September – get more details here
