“If you want a career in barbering, studying at City of Wolverhampton College is definite!” said 28-year-old Jessica Salmon who did her Level 2 qualification with us in 2019/20 and completed the Level 3 diploma here in 2021.
Jessica added: “I wanted to follow my dream of having a career in barbering and chose the college as it has a working salon, which allowed me to work practically on clients whilst doing my training.
“During the course I learnt many skills – such as working with different hair types and beards, the basic skills and techniques needed when cutting hair and creating styles which are complementary to the client – but, as well as the practical side of barbering, I also gained knowledge of the theory side too.
“I learnt how to work with clients in the salon, how to promote health and safety in the workplace and how a salon is run day-to-day, as well as how to have a successful career in barbering – all of which prepared me for when I qualified and started work.
“Throughout the course, the tutors gave demonstrations of cuts and styles we would be learning and provided support with theoretical modules and help with assignments and practical sessions.
” Since qualifying, I have got a job in a barber’s and work with clients on a daily basis, as well as working alongside other barbers to ensure successful running of the salon.
“I am continuing to learn and develop my skills as I work and, in the future, hope to achieve my dream of owning my own barber’s salon!”
