“I’d been told that an apprenticeship is the best route into employment – and it certainly is,” said 17-year-old Charlie Woodward who is an apprentice in the building control department at City of Wolverhampton Council.
Charlie, who left school last summer and combines working for the council with studying for a Level 2 diploma in business at college, added: “I’m gaining the skills needed for a future career in building control and I’m learning new things every day.
“I’ve learnt about building regulations, how to check plans and how to use technical systems and answer queries from customers – and I’ve been able to help colleagues with computer problems too.
“Even though I’ve just left school I’ve already got my foot on the career ladder and an working for a large organisation where hopefully there will be lots of opportunities in the future – I’m so glad I chose this route, it’s one of my best decisions so far!”
